Longtime Chetek resident and local legend Denny Overby passed away last week peacefully at his home at the age of 82. Overby leaves behind a legacy of remarkable achievements and cherished memories, most notably among his family, friends, former teachers and students and community members. Overby was a standout athlete at Chetek High School who went on to sign with the Milwaukee Braves in 1959. A shoulder injury disrupted a promising baseball career, but Overby returned to Chetek where he worked as the high school guidance counselor and coached both baseball and basketball. His dedication to the school district, sports and youths in the community was unmatched and he will be greatly missed but never forgotten. A full obituary for Overby can be found on page A2. A Celebration Of Life will be held at the Burnham-Ours-Kolstad Family Funeral Home this Saturday, March 23, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., with a short service held at 2 p.m. A tribute article in remembrance of Overby will appear in the March 27 issue of The Chetek Alert.
