The Sherman Lindsley family, of Dallas, is again homeless, the second time within two years they have lost their home to fire. … Orval Larson, 61, Barron County highway commissioner, since 1953, has resigned. Mr. Larson joined the highway department 40 years ago on the grading crew. … Officers of the IOOF Lodge #309 and Lakeview Rebekah Lodge #99 who were installed included Sybil Moe, Lela Flynn, Esther Kwallek, Margie Tubbs, Mabel Hanson, Eva Lindblad, Verna Knutson, Myrtle Niederloh, Pauline Brusen, Gladys Strong, Evelyn Carpenter, Bertha Adkins and Leona Steinke. … H. David Anderson, of Chetek, a student at Wisconsin State University-Eau Claire, leaves March 3 with the university choir for a four-day tour. David will be one of the soloists from “West Side Story.”

Veteran racer and snowshoer Dan Conway led a Chetek team of three hardy snowshoers to capturing three out of the first eight places in the Yukon Jack World Snowshoe Championship Race. Dan Conway placed fourth, Bill Knickerbocker placed eighth and Duane Fjelstad placed fifth. … Pete Hanson was the winner of the Chetek FFA Creed Contest and also took sixth place in the district contest. … Chetek Bulldog Mark Lenbom traveled to Amery to take part in the sectional wrestling tournament and finished in fourth place. … The New Auburn Trojans boys’ basketball team won the East Lakeland championship after defeating Weyerhaeuser 63-51. It has been more than 40 years since New Auburn won their conference.
Forty Years Ago—February 1984
A New Auburn landmark went up in flames with the burning of the 78-year-old New Auburn School by the New Auburn Fire Department. The village is now in the process of applying for low-rent housing to be built on this property. … The CTH M bridge over the narrows between Pokegama and Ojaski lakes, near Mike’s Lakeshore Resort and Bar, will be replaced this summer, according to Barron County Highway Commissioner Walt Knutson. It is expected the highway will be closed at the bridge site for at least 90 days. … Bulldogs Mary Hughes and Sheila Donaldson received all-conference recognition from the Heart O’North Conference by conference basketball coaches.
Thirty Years Ago—February 1994
The Chetek area shipped more pounds of recyclable materials to the county’s recycling center for the first year of operation than any other municipality according to information given out at a meeting held last week. Total pounds for the year were 55,800 or just under 28 tons of recyclable materials. … Chetek Middle School Mathcounts team placed second in Regional competition at UW-Barron County Campus in Rice Lake. Taking part in the event from Chetek were Yvonne Wood, Josh Lovelady, Randy Puig and Josh Butzler. … Missy Larson and Janet Welicky, members of the Chetek girls’ varsity basketball team, were named to the Heart O’North all-conference teams by conference coaches. … A sharp increase in numbers of persons employed by Tamarack International Inc. is expected once the company begins operations in Chetek in late March.

Attending were Nicque Ormstom and Alex Schoele. … Glen Perry rolled his first 300 game in league play in the Hits and Misses League at Chetek Bowling and Billiards. … Jackie Stocking, of Chetek, will leave this week for the Philippines to participate in a group study exchange sponsored by Rotary International. … The most improved fourth-grade readers in the Accelerated Readers program were Shana Renner, Tonya Murchy, Logan Tabor, Derek Piper-Robins, Erik Ziarnik and Angelene Bauch.

Bishop Robert Berg, of Chetek, who presides over the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will be celebrating his 25 years of ministry. There will be an open house at Chetek Lutheran Church on Feb. 29. … Chetek-Prairie Farm’s Shane Brady will make his second trip to the WIAA state wrestling tournament this weekend. … Kreg and Katelyn Ziarnik, of Chetek, skied in the Sons of Norway/Swiss Miss Barnebirkie in Hayward. … The Chetek Lions Club donated $1,500 to Kinship of Chetek. … Violet Sonnenberg, of Chetek, will be celebrating her 102nd birthday on Feb. 26 at Lone Oak Manor apartments.

Sgt. Allen Robertson, of Chetek, was one of three soldiers asked by Gov. Jim Doyle to represent the Wisconsin National Guard during his State of the State Address. Sgt. Allen Robertson was with the 32nd Brigade’s 105th Calvary when he was deployed to Iraq in August. … After almost 50 years of aiding county libraries, the Barron County Library Service is closing. … The high school hockey co-op between Cumberland and Barron-Chetek is official. The new co-op will go into effect for the 2009–10 season. … Chetek Bulldogs Alexis Schaaf and Christina Swangim were named to the Heart O’North girls’ basketball all-conference team. … CHS wrestling cheerleaders are Kristen Fowler, Jessica Michaelson, Cassandra Gomez, Kelly Damroth and Mallorie Moon.
Ten Years Ago—February 2014
Winterfest was cancelled due to the amount of snow on the lake. ... The Smarticles 2.0 linked up with the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser boys basketball team to raise money for the Chetek food shelf in order to complete a service project for their Destination Imagination team challenge. The team invited the public to purchase tickets at the C-W High School girls varsity basketball game on Jan. 24, and at the boys varsity game Feb 4. At halftime, tickets were drawn for the opportunity to shoot baskets and win prizes. The Smarticles 2.0 team went to the food shelf to present the $525 they raised Thursday, Feb. 13. They 2.0 presented their project details at the regional competition in Prescott Saturday, March 15.
